What a crowd we had out for our first points race of the year with 39 drivers hitting the asphalt for Spring Enduro practice on Saturday – weather was cool but a wonderful day for racing. Danny Ide took the Top Time of Day in his ’48 Willys followed closely by the McNeelys in their wide tire turbo Miatas. Blake DeWitt returned to the top of the PAX charts in his ES Miata by 0.095 over Robert Foster in his AS Corvette Grand Sport, and our fastest Novice was Mark Felch in a circle track caged Honda Civic. The two lap course had drivers reversing direction for lap two, and caught quite a few drivers out – we had an alarming number of DNFs, but everyone got at least one time, and some valuable practice for what not to do on Sunday.
Sunday still broke a few hearts and left some carnage. We started with a two lap practice warm-up, then sent each car out for their 5 lap Enduro. Axel Mussman kicked off the trail of tears with an overheating problem that stopped a terrific looking run on lap 4, David Winterburn had a throttle sticking and couldn’t finish his laps, Blake DeWitt suffered a catastrophic front sway bar mount failure on the practice lap and had to go to a backup car (thanks Troy!), and Danny Ide, well, Danny had a wild run that ended in a sea of splattered cones on the tail end of lap 5.
One driver overcame the challenges of the day – Robert Foster – and earned a clean sweep Top Time of Day and PAX in the wicked fast Corvette, besting the field by over a second raw time and nine seconds for PAX. Robert nearly pulled off the same feat in the Fall Enduro, such a fantastic run and a great job! Our fastest Novice Sunday was new Club member Kurtis Bell in a Porsche Boxter.
